WHO Issues Alert Over Critical Scarcity of Obesity Injections

Fewer than one in 10 individuals that would benefit from obesity jabs such as Wegovy have access to them, caution the World Health Organization as it releases its first recommendations on the drugs.

Given over a billion individuals worldwide currently classified as obese, it is calling for more widespread and fairer availability to this class of drugs.

Based on projections, in excess of 2,000,000,000 are projected to be living with obesity by 2030 unless action is taken.

"Our latest guidance recognises that obesity is a long-term condition that can be addressed with thorough and ongoing support," said WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.

Significant expense, insufficient output, and supply-chain constraints are key obstacles to widespread access to the jabs that can assist patients in reducing substantial weight, notes the agency.

Despite the current best projected scenario, the manufacturing of GLP-1 therapies might only reach approximately 100 million people – less than 10% of the global need, as stated by the health organization.

The guideline calls on nations and manufacturers to widen access, via approaches like patent sharing.

The intellectual property rights on semaglutide – the primary component of a leading brand – is set to lapse in a number of countries in 2026.

The Way Obesity Injections Work

These medications mimick a natural hormone to slow digestion, curb appetite and enhance feelings of fullness so people reduce food intake.

People usually begin shedding pounds after several weeks of commencing the once-weekly jabs.

Research suggests people may put most of the weight back on a year later of stopping the medication, when their normal appetite return.

To be above a healthy weight elevates your chance for developing health problems, like diabetes, cardiovascular issues, stroke, and certain malignancies.

Obesity concerns people in every country and was responsible for over three and a half million fatalities worldwide in 2024, per the health agency.
