The Video Platform Provides Viewers Power to Limit AI-Generated Content in Timelines
Users will soon have a fresh option that permits them to cut down on the volume of AI-made videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the platform revealed that it now features over 1 bn content made with AI.
Testing and Rollout
This change is undergoing trials over the next few weeks before a global launch. This development aligns with a surge in AI-generated material, spurred by recent video-generation tools.
AI Proliferation Online
Recent reports that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising channels on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this content is deemed “AI slop”, a phrase for substandard, bulk-generated content that is often nonsensical or dreamlike.
Our research shows that a lot of users appreciate content created using AI tools, from computer-generated images to science explainers, and we aim to offer the community the option to adjust the amount of that, according to their own choices,” stated a platform representative.
Volume and Proportions
TikTok announced that there are now 1.3bn videos on its network tagged as made with AI. In total, more than 100 million media items are submitted to the service daily, making AI content a limited portion of its overall inventory.
User Control Features
Members will be able to decrease or raise the volume of AI content they view by using the “manage topic” setting in the application and choosing the AI content topic. Further subjects that currently be controlled under the filter cover politics, fashion, cosmetics, and choreography.
AI Disclosure Rules
Its rules mandate creators to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it bans harmful deepfakes of well-known individuals or crisis events. Any believable AI video that is unmarked can be removed under its user guidelines.
Additionally, the platform will from now on attach an “AI-made” watermark to content created with its proprietary AI systems, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for spotting content made by AI. This measure is designed to stop users from attempting to circumvent the labeling process.
AI Literacy Programs
TikTok is also launching a $2 million AI literacy fund for experts and organizations to produce educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will assist charitable organizations specializing in training programming and robotics.
Moderation Strategy
The video-sharing app has supported its safety measures, following debate over intentions to lay off hundreds of safety staff in Britain. It is set to eliminate 439 jobs in its content moderation department in London, with labor groups and digital protection specialists raising concerns that staff are being displaced by automated systems.
A senior executive stated that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can safeguard staff by eliminating the most harmful content prior to it is viewed by humans. The platform reported a 76% decrease in explicit and harmful content handled by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to the use of its automated systems.
We believe it is crucial to balance humans and technology to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s very important to reduce exposure to unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is making a difference process content quickly.”
