Nepal's Electoral Scene Sees Major Alliance Forged Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of the upcoming national polls, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the ouster of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Demands

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-corruption protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable casualties.

"Consensus must not be as the leader seeks, it should be what the country needs," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a catalyst for deeper discontent stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding accusations of systemic graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the chairperson of the RSP. In turn, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political shift. He was instrumental in setting up the interim government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate event, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend conducted consultations with a number of major political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the heads of other major parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
