Critical Role Season Four Introduces the Soldiers Party
Ever since the premiere of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a colorful mix of personalities, and a exciting storyline showcasing divine entities, evil spirits, and sinister influences expanding in influence within Dol-Makjar.
Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of this adventure follow below.
The Soldiers Table Unveiled
The third episode finished on a dramatic pause and presented the initial group of adventurers who will branch out from the central cast to begin their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.
The combat-focused team features the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), Thimble (Laura), the fierce warrior (the cast member), Wicander (Sam Riegel), and the mysterious adventurer (Robbie Daymond).
Dividing the Cast
Considering 13 cast members, it was clear from the beginning that keeping everyone at one table would be unfeasible.
That’s why, the opening chapters of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
According to Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are rare.
Upon first impression, characters like the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem out of place, but the events of the third episode make it clear why these specific adventurers are best suited for the warrior group.
Why They Must Go
First, the group knows exactly where to head next after a intense opening clash with the antagonists.
A former ally of Thjazi—whose passing kicked off the narrative’s action—used the enemy for his selfish purposes, breaking into Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.
Casimir then settled his obligations and ran away to a secure base in the northern region, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.
Individual Reasons
Additionally, each character has a personal reason to exit Dol-Makjar:
- Thimble, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, seeks retribution.
- The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and advises that it is a hostile environment.
- The warrior and The healer, having disobeyed his house’s orders to execute Teor and instead rescued him, have no safe haven.
- However, their status as prominent individuals in the influential clan could enable the party enter locations they typically wouldn’t be able to.
- Moreover, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now follow him everywhere.
Fugitives
Lastly, all of them are sought by the powers that govern the city for a multiple motives, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
- Tyranny and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the horde of evil beings they are partnered with.
- The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.
This results in them few options but to journey toward the remote area in pursuit of the traitor.
